The Bodum Cafetiere
The cafetiere (also known as the french press) is a very simple way to make a satisfying cup of fresh coffee. Reputedly, it was first invented over 150 years ago in France, but the system was only patented in 1929 in Italy. Bodum was founded in 1944, in Copenhagen, but the first Bodum cafetiere, the Bistro, did not appear until 30 years later. Since then, they have designed many versions and there should be something to suit the many varied tastes of modern coffee drinkers.
Bodum Cafetiere – Bistro
There are several styles within the Bistro range, which is a bit confusing as they have the same name for quite different designs.
The Bistro is brilliant, a double wall Borosilicate glass 8 cup jug, with chrome lid and integral glass handle, keeping the coffee hot for up to 2 hours, which is wonderful news for those of us who always seem to get interrupted just as we’re ready to pour our coffee!
The Shin Bistro is another double wall 8 cup Bodum cafetiere, with a chrome lid and black stay-cool, rubber handle. The Shin Bistro is also available as a single wall in 3 and 8 cup sizes.
The Bistro Mug Press is a very clever design, enabling you to make freshly brewed coffee in your own mug, it is made of stainless steel and sits inside your mug, you can even heat the milk in a microwave using the small beaker supplied.
There is also the Bistro in double wall stainless steel, which is a classic looking 8 cup coffee maker. The Bistro Nouveau is available in 3, 8 and 12 cup sizes, it is a simple yet practical Bodum cafetiere design, ideal for a large dinner party situation.
Bodum Cafetiere – Chambord
This iconic Bodum cafetiere looks very unusual in gold, but is also finished in Chrome. It is a double wall, 8 cup and looks set to be around for a long time.
Again, Bodum provide little to identify between the different styles in the Chambord range; there is an 8 cup s/steel version with a silicone non-slip base; a new design of the classic Chambord, in 8 or 12 cup, with double wall Borosilicate glass enclosed in a s/steel holder and is spill proof with a silicone gasket; a 3, 4, 8 or 12 cup single wall Borosilicate glass version in gold or chrome, with a spill proof lid.
Finally there is the original design in single wall glass, although it can be said that newer designs have improved upon the classic Bodum cafetiere design.
